Located in Maikal Hills of the Satpura Mountain range and spread over the districts of Mandla and Balaghat in Madhya Pradesh. The park encompasses 940 Sq Km of the core Zone, a Buffer Zone of 1067 Sq Km, and along with in the adjoining Phen Sanctuary of 110 km sq, forms the Kanha Tiger Reserve, which at 2117 sq Km is the largest in the country. It forms a biosphere reserve unmatched in flora and fauna diversity. Apart from the usual attraction of the Tiger, Leopard, Gaur, Barasingha, Chital and other species Kanha is home to more than 300 species of birds, some of which have still not been accurately identified and documented. Sal dominates the flora of the region, yet, the park is home to more than a 1000 species of plants. Some of these plants have been used in traditional Tribal medicine for ages and are being researched only now.
