Experiences

Activities

From the first birdsong to the last star: five ways to spend your days at Saja and Sal.

Days at camp

Between safaris in the park, the estate and the country around it are yours to explore.

Every activity is led by our team, at the pace you choose. Tell us what interests you when you enquire, and we will plan your days around it.

i · Birding

Feathers at first light

More than 300 species of birds have been recorded in the Kanha landscape, and the estate’s mix of Sal forest, stream, lake edge and open grassland brings a good many of them within sight of the tents.

Kingfishers watch the water, spotted owlets peer from hollow trees, and the canopy rings with drongos, barbets and paradise flycatchers. Set out with a guide in the first hours of the day, or simply sit on your deck with a pair of binoculars and a cup of tea.

Bring binoculars

Keep a pair close at hand: the birding is superb right across the estate.

Dawn and dusk

Birds are busiest in the first and last hours of daylight, when the forest is cool.

For photographers

Tell us what you hope to see, and we will take you to the right corners of the estate.

ii · Jungle Trails

The jungle, up close and on foot

The estate gives you a rare chance to explore the jungle up close. A morning walk through the cool, clean air, fragrant with Sal, is a rejuvenating way to begin the day — and you never quite know what you will meet around the next bend.

Walks are unhurried, with time to stop, to read the tracks in the sand and to pour a cup of tea beside the stream while the forest carries on around you.

Wild animals from the national park often use these trails. Please go out only with one of our guides.

iii · Cycling

Through the villages of Mukki

Some of the best of Kanha lies outside the park gates. Cycle out with one of our team along quiet lanes and forest edges to the villages around Mukki, past paddy fields, mahua trees and mud-walled homes painted in earth colours.

It is a gentle, easy-paced ride, with plenty of stops along the way — for the view, for a conversation, or for a glass of chai in the village.

iv · Local Markets

The haats of Garhi and Mowala

Once a week, the villages around Kanha come together to trade. A visit to a local market is one of the most colourful mornings you can spend here.

Garhi

Stalls of vegetables, spices, grain and household goods, with traders and families arriving on foot and by bicycle from the surrounding villages.

Mowala

A smaller, local market where you can see the rhythm of village life and pick up something made in the region to take home.

Plan it with us

Each market keeps its own day of the week. Let us know you’re interested and we will fit a visit into your stay.

v · Stargazing

Nights under a jungle sky

Far from city lights, the sky over the estate is properly dark. On clear nights the stars come down to the treeline, and through the cooler, drier months the Milky Way arcs over the Sal.

Watch from your tent’s deck, or from beside the fire after dinner, with the calls of the night jungle all around you.
