Our neighbour
Kanha National Park
One of India’s great tiger forests, ten minutes down the road from camp.
The Maikal Hills
Kanha lies in the Maikal Hills of the Satpura range, across the Mandla and Balaghat districts of Madhya Pradesh.
A biosphere of extraordinary diversity, it is a landscape of Sal forest and open meadow, of bamboo slopes and quiet streams — and of the animals that made it famous.
Together, the national park, its buffer zone and the adjoining Phen Sanctuary form the Kanha Tiger Reserve, one of the largest in India.
Wildlife
Tiger, leopard, gaur and barasingha
Kanha is home to tiger, leopard, gaur, barasingha, chital and many other species. More than 300 species of birds have been recorded here — and some are yet to be accurately identified and documented.
The hard-ground barasingha survives nowhere else on earth. In 1970 just 66 or so remained; a long conservation programme in Kanha has brought it back.
